Advertising with Google won’t have any effect on your site’s presence in our search results. Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results, and it costs nothing to appear in our organic search results. Free resources such as Webmaster Tools, the official Webmaster Central blog, and our discussion forum can provide you with a great deal of information about how to optimize your site for organic search. Before beginning your search for an SEO, it’s a great idea to become an educated consumer and get familiar with how search engines work. We recommend starting here:

If you’re thinking about hiring an SEO, the earlier the better. A great time to hire is when you’re considering a site redesign, or planning to launch a new site. That way, you and your SEO can ensure that your site is designed to be search engine-friendly from the bottom up. However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site.

Some useful questions to ask an SEO include:

• Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories?
• Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines?
• Do you offer any online marketing services or advice to complement your organic search business?
• What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success?
• What’s your experience in my industry?
• What’s your experience in my country/city?
• What’s your experience developing international sites?
• What are your most important SEO techniques?
• How long have you been in business?
• How can I expect to communicate with you? Will you share with me all the changes you make to my site, and provide detailed information about your recommendations and the reasoning behind them?

While SEOs can provide clients with valuable services, some unethical SEOs have given the industry a black eye through their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to manipulate search engine results in unfair ways. Practices that violate our guidelines may result in a negative adjustment of your site’s presence in Google, or even the removal of your site from our index. Here are some things to consider:

• Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue.

Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:

“Dear google.com,
I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories…”

Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited email about search engines as you do for “burn fat at night” diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.

• No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.

Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or by submitting a Sitemap and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.

• Be careful if a company is secretive or won’t clearly explain what they intend to do.

Ask for explanations if something is unclear. If an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, such as doorway pages or “throwaway” domains, your site could be removed entirely from Google’s index. Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire, so it’s best to be sure you know exactly how they intend to “help” you. If an SEO has FTP access to your server, they should be willing to explain all the changes they are making to your site.

• You should never have to link to an SEO.

Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of “free-for-all” links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that don’t affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines — at least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive.

• Choose wisely.

While you consider whether to go with an SEO, you may want to do some research on the industry. Google is one way to do that, of course. You might also seek out a few of the cautionary tales that have appeared in the press, including this article on one particularly aggressive SEO: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002002970_nwbizbriefs12.html. While Google doesn’t comment on specific companies, we’ve encountered firms calling themselves SEOs who follow practices that are clearly beyond the pale of accepted business behavior. Be careful.

• Be sure to understand where the money goes.

While Google never sells better ranking in our search results, several other search engines combine pay-per-click or pay-for-inclusion results with their regular web search results. Some SEOs will promise to rank you highly in search engines, but place you in the advertising section rather than in the search results. A few SEOs will even change their bid prices in real time to create the illusion that they “control” other search engines and can place themselves in the slot of their choice. This scam doesn’t work with Google because our advertising is clearly labeled and separated from our search results, but be sure to ask any SEO you’re considering which fees go toward permanent inclusion and which apply toward temporary advertising.

• What are the most common abuses a website owner is likely to encounter?

One common scam is the creation of “shadow” domains that funnel users to a site by using deceptive redirects. These shadow domains often will be owned by the SEO who claims to be working on a client’s behalf. However, if the relationship sours, the SEO may point the domain to a different site, or even to a competitor’s domain. If that happens, the client has paid to develop a competing site owned entirely by the SEO.

Another illicit practice is to place “doorway” pages loaded with keywords on the client’s site somewhere. The SEO promises this will make the page more relevant for more queries. This is inherently false since individual pages are rarely relevant for a wide range of keywords. More insidious, however, is that these doorway pages often contain hidden links to the SEO’s other clients as well. Such doorway pages drain away the link popularity of a site and route it to the SEO and its other clients, which may include sites with unsavory or illegal content.

• What are some other things to look out for?

There are a few warning signs that you may be dealing with a rogue SEO. It’s far from a comprehensive list, so if you have any doubts, you should trust your instincts. By all means, feel free to walk away if the SEO:

– owns shadow domains
- puts links to their other clients on doorway pages
- offers to sell keywords in the address bar
- doesn’t distinguish between actual search results and ads that appear on search results pages
- guarantees ranking, but only on obscure, long keyword phrases you would get anyway
- operates with multiple aliases or falsified WHOIS info
- gets traffic from “fake” search engines, spyware, or scumware
- has had domains removed from Google’s index or is not itself listed in Google

Build an Empire?

When you’re deciding to become a website publisher you will fall into one of two broad categories:

• Publish 100 websites that each earn $1 a day profit
• Publish 1 website that earns $100 a day profit

The reality of it is, most people end up somewhere in between. Having 100 websites leaves you with maintenance, management and content issues. Having one website leaves you open to all sort of fluctuations (search engines algorithm’s, market trends, etc). You can adapt your plan on the way, but you’ll have an easier time if you start out going in the direction of where you want to end up.

General or Niche

You can build your website around general topics or niche ones. Generally speaking niche websites work better with adsense. First off the ad targeting is much better. Secondly as you have a narrow focus your writing naturally becomes more expert in nature. Hopefully this makes you more authority in your field.

If this is your first try at building an adsense website, make it about something you enjoy. It will make the process much easier and less painful to accomplish. You should however make sure that your topic has enough of an ad inventory and the payout is at a level you are comfortable with. You may love medieval folk dancing, but the pool of advertisers for that subject is very small (in fact it’s currently zero).

Once you’ve gotten the hang of how Adsense works on a website, you are going to want to dabble in some high paying keywords, you may even be tempted to buy a high paying keyword list. This does come with some dangers. First off the level of fraud is much higher on the big money terms. Secondly there is a distortion of the supply and demand relationship for these terms. Everyone wants ads on their website that make $35 or more a click, however the number of advertisers who are willing to pay that much is pretty limited. Additionally the competition for that traffic is going to be stiff. So, don’t try to run with the big dogs if you can’t keep up. If you have to ask if you’re a big dog, then chances are, you’re not. I have used a high dollar keywords report from cashkeywords.com and was pleased with my results (see cash keywords free offer recap).

New Sites, Files and Maintenance

When you’re building a new site don’t put adsense on it until it’s finished. In fact I’d go even farther and say don’t put adsense on it until you have built inbound links and started getting traffic. If you put up a website with “lorem ipsum” dummy or placeholder text, your adsense ads will almost certainly be off topic. This is often true for new files on existing websites, especially if the topic is new or different. It may take days or weeks for google’s media bot to come back to your page and get the ads properly targeted. TIP: If you start getting lots of traffic from a variety of IP’s you will speed this process up dramatically.

I like to build my sites using include files. I put the header, footer and navigation in common files. It makes it much easier to maintain and manage. I also like to put my adsense code in include files. If I want/need to change my adsense code, it’s only one file I have to work with. TIP: I also use programming to turn the adsense on or off. I can change one global variable to true or false and my adsense ads will appear or disappear.

Managing URL’s and channels

Adsense channels is one area where it’s really easy to go overboard with stats. You can set up URL channels to compare how one website is doing to another. You can also set up sub channels for each URL. If you wanted to you do something channels like this:

• domain1.com – 728 banner
• domain1.com – 336 block
• domain1.com – text link
• domain2.com – 728 banner
• domain2.com – image banner
• domain2.com – 336 block
• domain3.com – 300 block

While this is great for testing and knowing who clicks where and why, it makes your reporting a little wonky. Your total number will always be correct but when you look at your reports with a channel break down things will get displayed multiple times and not add up to correct total. Makes things pretty confusing, so decide if you really need/want that level of reporting detail. TIP: At the very least you want to know what URL is generating the income so be sure to enter distinct URL channels.

Site Design and Integration

Once you know you are going to put adsense on your website you’re going to have to consider where to put it. If this is new site it’s easier, if it’s an existing site it’s more difficult. While there are some people who will be able to do it, in most cases I’d say if you just slap the adsense code in, you’ll end up with a frankensite monster (props to Tedster of WMW for the buzzword). While every website is different, Google has published some heat maps showing the optimal locations. No surprise that the best spots are middle of the page and left hand side. Now I’ve done really well by placing it on the right, but you should know why you’re doing it that way before hand, and be prepared to change it if it doesn’t work out.

Google has also has published a list of the highest performing ad sizes:

• 336×280 large rectangle
• 300×250 inline rectangle
• 160×600 wide skyscraper

From the sites that I run, I do really well with the 336 rectangle and 160 skyscraper. My next best performing ad size is the 728 leaderboard, I don’t really use the 300 inline rectangle too often. So really it depends on how well you integrate these into your site. Placement can have a dramatic effect on performance. TIP: When working on a new site or new layout you may want to give each location it’s own channel for a little while until you understand the users behavior.

Another ‘trick’ that can increase your CTR is by blending your adsense into your body copy. For example if your body copy is black, remove the adsense border and make the title, text, and URL black.TIP: Try changing all of your page hyperlinks to a high contrast color (like dark red or a bold blue) then change the adsense title to the same color.

The one area where I’ve found blended ads don’t perform as well is forums, especially ones with a high volume of repeat members. Regular visitors develop banner blindness pretty quickly. One ‘trick’ to keep the ads from being ignored is to randomize the color and even the placement. As with any of the decisions about location, placement and color it’s a trade off. How much do you emphasize the ads without annoying your visitors. Remember it’s better to have a 1% CTR with 500 regular visitors as opposed to a 5% CTR with 50 visitors. TIP: For forums try placing the adsense ads directly above or below the the first forum thread.

Using Images

One of the latest ‘secrets’ to make the rounds is using images placed directly above or below an adsense leaderboard. This has been used for a while but came out in a digital point forum thread where a member talked about quadrupling their CTR. Basically you set up the adsense code in a table with four images that line up directly with the ads. Whether or not this is deceptive is fuzzy and very subjective. Obviously four blinking arrows would be ‘enticing people to click’ and be against the adsense TOS. However placing pictures of 4 laptops over laptops ads isn’t, so use your best judgment here and look at it from the advertiser or Google’s perspective. If you have a question as to your implementation being ‘over the line’ write to adsense and ask them to take a look.

As far as using the images, I’ve done it and can tell you it definitely works. You get the best results when the images ‘complete the story the ads are telling’. For example if you have ads about apple pies, use pictures of freshly baked apple pies, instead of granny smith, Macintosh, pink lady, and braeburn apples. TIP: Don’t limit yourself to using images only on that size ad unit, it works just as well with the other sizes, like the 336 rectangle.

Added:
I got a little criticizm for this and rightly so, as I wasn’t specific as I could have been. Do not use very identifiable brand name or products for your images. Use generic non-specific stock images whenever possible and appropriate.

Multiple Ad Units

Another way to increase ad revenue is to use multiple ad units. According to Google’s TOS you are allowed to post up to three ad units per page. Similar to standard search results the highest paying ad units will be served first and the lowest being served last. If there is enough of an ad inventory, place all three ad units. However you should pay attention to the payouts. Current assumption is you get 60% of the revenue (on a $0.05 click you get $0.03). So if a click from the third ad unit is only paying between 3 to 5 cents you may want to omit it from your page. This is one are where giving your ad units channels does have value. If one ad unit is getting a higher percentage of click throughs you’ll want to make sure the highest paying ads are being served there. TIP:Use CSS positioning to get your highest paying ads serving in the location with the highest CTR.

Adsense in RSS

With the growth of blogs and RSS feeds you’re starting to see adsense included in the feeds now. IMHO this doesn’t work, and here’s why:

• You only get to place one ad unit.
• You have no control over finding the ‘sweet spot’ for the ad unit.
• The ads are usually poorly targeted (this is getting better).
• People develop ‘banner blindness’.

I know people like being able to read full postings in their feed reader, and there are at least a dozen other reasons for full posts from pleasing your users to mobile offline computing, all of which are completely valid. However if your website depends on generating adsense revenue to survive, then bring them to the site and show them the ads there.

Affiliate Sites

Placing Adsense on affiliate sites is tricky. Are you giving up a $10, $20, or $30 sale for a $1 click? This is something you have to test on your own to figure out. If you aren’t converting now it’s definitely worth a try. I like to use adsense on my article pages. For example let’s say you had an affiliate website where you sold shoes. You’re going to need some related articles to ‘flesh out’ the site. Things like ‘getting a shoe shine’ or ‘finding a shoe repair shop’ these are excellent spots for adsense. While you won’t get rich, they will usually provide a small steady income and cover things like hosting costs.TIP: If you find you have pages getting more than 50 clicks per month add more pages about this topic, and link the pages together. Mine you logs for the search terms used.

PPC Arbitrage

This is a dicey subject so I’m going to steer clear of precise examples. Basically you bid on low volume uber niche terms at a very low cost. You set up landing page that contains high payout ads for the related general topic. You are looking for terms with a large gap between the price you are bidding on adwords and the price you are getting on Adsense. If you pay $0.10 a click and get $1.00 a click you make $0.90 each click. To get your adsense ad approved you will need to ‘add some value’ along the way. You can make a killing or get taken to the cleaners with this one, so make sure you know what you are doing before you try it.

728 leaderboard works very well if it is just above the end of the “above the fold” area on what would be considered your viewers average resolution/browser window size if there are few other enticing links above the fold. Makes for an interesting layout but if you’re building a site for AdSense it may be worth it. We consistently receive very high CTRs from doing this.

Try to build sites that allow you to quickly try any and all of those locations outlined in the heatmap guide or at least allow you a
wide degree of freedom to easily change ad/content locations.

Apabila menggunakan ip dinamis, saran saya jangan terburu-buru untuk investasi apalagi upgrade, karena sayang apabila nantinya tiba-tiba akun kita di banned dari situs ptc tersebut dikarenakan banyak member di Indonesia menggunakan 1 provider yang sama semacam smart, telkomflash, im2, speedy kelas business kebawah, dll.

Kenapa tidak boleh?

Jawabannya ada pada TOS dan FAQ pada masing-masing situs PTC.

1.2. Email

Email merupakan suatu hal yang mutlak dimiliki oleh setiap orang yang ingin terjun di bisnis online termasuk bisnis ptc salah satunya. Email berfungsi sebagai syarat registrasi dan komunikasi antara diri kita dengan situs yang kita ikuti.

Sebagai saran, saya merekomendasikan untuk menggunakan email dari layanan GMAIL, karena layanan ini sangat friendly dan banyak Internet Marketer yang merekomendasikan. Saya yakin bahwa setiap orang pasti mempunyai email, jika belum silahkan membuatnya di sini atau langsung klik daftar gmail

1.3. Payment Online

Payment Online adalah sarana untuk transaksi di dunia internet, entah itu untuk menerima bayaran atau mengirim dana. Untuk payment processor online yang sering digunakan oleh situs ptc adalah PayPal dan AlertPay. Tidak menutup kemungkinan pengunaan Liberty Reserve, Netteller, dan Perfect Money.

Mulailah untuk membuat payment online Paypal dan AlertPay, semuanya gratis. Satu hal lagi yang harus dilakukan adalah mem “verified” status akun kita di masing-masing payment online tersebut, karena informasi berkembang bahwa banyak situs PTC yang hanya memberikan bayarannya kepada member dengan status Paypal atau AlertPaynya Verified.

Untuk memverified status Paypal tidak mutlak harus mempunyai kartu kredit, karena banyak layanan untuk yang satu ini, salah satunya di www.jualvcc.net. Sedangkan untuk AlertPay, syarat verified sangat mudah yaitu dengan mengirimkan/mengupload hasil scan Photo ID: SIM, KTP, atau Passport dan Proof Address: Utility Bill (Tagihan Listrik, PBB, PAM atau tagihan lainnya), Phone Bill (Tagihan Telepon, bisa juga Tagihan Pasca Bayar Hp), Credit Card Statement (Tagihan Kartu Kredit). Semua syarat-syarat tersebut harus di scan dan di upload maksimal 5 Mb.

1.4. Cara Main
Cara Klik Iklan
Untuk cara bermain di PTC saya kira Anda sudah tahu caranya, bagi yang belum… saya sebelumya juga sudah membuatkan postingan tentang cara meng klik iklan di situs PTC, di sini saya mengambil contoh PalmBux.

Sejatinya cara klik iklan diberbagai ptc hampir sama alias tipikal, hanya saja penamaannya saja yang berbeda, umumnya iklan yang akan di klik ada pada View Advertisement atau View Ads atau Ads atau Surf Ads dan lain sebagainya.

Setelah mengklik iklan, harus ditunggu sampai iklan terbuka sempurna (biasanya sekitar 20 s/d 35 detik). Sebagai indikator bahwa iklan yang di klik sudah selesai akan ada sinyal tanda centang atau Done atau ada keterangan bahwa nilai earn sudah di kreditkan/masuk dalam account balances kita.

Tips. Apabila iklan yang sedang dibuka tidak juga terload dengan sempurna, lakukan langkah menekan tombol Esc pada keyboard atau klik stop pada browser Anda, tetapi cara ini tidak berlaku untuk NeoBux, PalmBux, dan sebagaian ptc lainnya.

Waktu Reset Iklan

Pada semua PTC, kita diharuskan melakukan klik secara teratur 1 x 24 jam setiap hari, dimana masing-masing PTC mempunyai waktu reset iklan yang berbeda-beda. Saya akan mengambil contoh 2 PTC yakni NeoBux dan PalmBux.
Lihat pada gambar berikut ini:

Pada NeoBux, Waktu reset iklan setiap member berbeda-beda. Lihat pada tanda kotak merah sebelah kiri pada gambar di atas, di sana tertulis Your advertisement reset at 16.44. Apa artinya? Waktu tersebut mengindikasikan bahwa waktu reset iklan setiap pukul 16.44 WIB, Ingat!! untuk Neobux waktu reset adalah waktu yang sesuai dengan waktu kita alias waktu Indonesia.

Sedangkan untuk keterangan pada kotak merah di sebelah kanan, adalah menandakan waktu server lokal Indonesia yakni pada saat saya buka tepat pukul 17.05 WIB atau 05.05 pm. Sedangkan untuk waktu reset server Neo sendiri adalah tepat pk. 01.00 atau di Indonesia pada pk. 12.00 WIB.

Sekali lagi ingat! ini hanya khusus untuk NeoBux, sedangkan PTC lain jelas berbeda, saya akan contohkan nanti pada situs PTC PalmBux.

Jadi, apabila pada NeoBux kita di jadwalkan reset iklan pada pk. 16.44 WIB, maka iklan akan ada 1 detik setelah waktu tersebut sampai dengan pk. 16.43 WIB keesokan harinya jika kita belum melakukan klik, tentunya bagi yang mempunyai referral harus menjadwal kapan harus melakukan klik, karena akan berimbas pada perhitungan klik referalnya keesokan harinya.

Lihat perbedaan dengan PTC lainnya, di sini seperti uraian di atas saya ambil contoh Palmbux, perhatikan gambar di bawah:

Perhatikan yang saya tandai kotak warna biru, di sana disebutkan Next Ads Reset 12.08 AM EST dan Current Server Time 11.10 AM EST, waktu tersebut adalah waktu server PalmBux.

Next Ads Reset 12.00 AM EST jika dikonversikan sesuai waktu Indonesia yakni tepat pk. 06.00 WIB pagi hari, sedangkan Current Server Time 11.10 AM EST adalah waktu pada saat saya membuka view ads yakni tepat pk. 17.10 WIB, jadi ada perbedaan 6 jam.

Untuk Palmbux, iklan akan terbuka (bisa di klik) 1 detik setelah pk 06.00 WIB pagi hari, berakhir pk. 05.59 WIB keesokan harinya serta berlaku untuk semua member PalmBux. Perhatikan perbedaannya dengan Neobux, jelas dan pasti beda kan? Hmmm…… sekarang anda tahu.

1.5. Istilah dan Kegunaan

Beberapa istilah pada PTC yang umum dan harus Anda ketahui, antara lain:

1. Account Overview; informasi mengenai akun Anda yang terdiri dari status membership, daftar referral, statistik klik, dan balances/pendapatan klik.
2. Direct referral/Referral Langsung; member yang bergabung melalui url yang Anda promosikan baik melalui media iklan atau blog.
3. Rent referral/Referral Sewa; member yang disewakan oleh situs PTC dengan harga yang ditentukan dan berjangka waktu 1 bulan.
4. Banners; merupakan tools/alat untuk mempromosikan url Anda disertai dengan gambar statis maupun animasi.
5. Personal; di sinilah informasi mengenai password dan pengaturan status Anda pada forum, termasuk untuk merubah password dan atau menambah secondary password (password kedua) jika ada.
6. Advertisement; apabila Anda menginginkan untuk memasang iklan.
7. Rental Queque; salah satu fitur cara untuk mendapatkan referral sewa dengan cara indent/pesan dengan harga yang sudah ditentukan situs PTC.
8. Statistic; informasi grafik dari aktifitas Anda termasuk aktifitas referral yang anda punya.
9. History; catatan tentang perjalanan akun Anda dimulai pada saat mendaftar, melakukan sewa referral, mendapatkan referral langsung, upgrade membership, menarik pendapatan (cashout)
10. Login; record status login anda pada situs PTC tersebut, di sini anda dapat melihat apabila ada kejanggalan mengenai status login Anda pada situs PTC yang anda ikuti.
11. Upgrade; Kenaikan status membership Anda dengan cara membeli layanan membership yang lebih tinggi dengan harga yang sudah ditentukan dan masing-masing PTC mempunyai jenis status membership yang berbeda-beda, jangka waktu yang diberikan antara lain 1 bln, 3 bln, 6 bln, dan 1 thn. Kenaikan status membership berefek pada nilai earn per klik, umumnya 2 x lebih besar dari nilai earn per klik membership standard.
12. Recycle; strategi yang dilakukan untuk penggantian referral sewa yang kurang dan atau tidak aktif dengan biaya yang sudah ditentukan.
13. AVG; nilai rata-rata aktifitas klik referral sewa Anda, dengan rumusan jumlah total klik referral di bagi jumlah referral Anda dalam satu hari (AVG=total klik referral 1 hr/jumlah referral)
14. Cashout; disinilah tempat dimana Anda dapat menarik bayaran dari hasil jerih payah anda, pada umumnya PTC menetapkan minimal 2 $ untuk penarikan perdana.
15. PTC Legit; situs PTC yang dapat dipercaya dan membayar membernya
16. PTC Scam; situs PTC yang tidak melakukan pembayaran kepada membernya.

Dengan Unverified PayPal anda belum bisa withdraw ke rekening bank atau kartu kredit anda. Untuk bisa withdraw menarik uang dari balance paypal, anda sudah harus menjadi Verified account.

Megapixels
When it comes to megapixels, the more the better. I recommend a minimum of 2, but 3 or 4 is great. We did a test to see if a camera with 2.3 megapixels (actually 1.92 – 1600 x 1200) could produce a good quality 8×10.

Turns out it can, if you have the right paper and printer. We used HP Premium Plus photo paper with an HP 970 series printer and made a fantastic 8 x 10. Remember, I was a professional photographer before I got into computing, so I know a good print when I see it

The resolution at 8×10 (we had to crop in to make the picture proportional to 8×10) was only 150 DPI. Most printers would not make a real good 8×10 at that resolution, but this one did. So, if you want to be sure you can get good 8 x 10s, you may want to go with a 3 megapixel camera or better (that gives you around 200 DPI at 8×10 size, still not quite the optimum 300 DPI, but it looks good with the right printer).

Optical vs Digital Zoom
You’ve probably noticed that most digital cameras have both a specification for digital and optical zoom. Pay the most attention to the optical zoom.

The optical zoom magnifies (zooms in) using glass. The digital zoom basically crops out the edge of the picture to make the subject appear closer, causing you to lose resolution or to get an interpolated resolution (i.e. the camera adds pixels). Neither of which help image quality.

Finally, make sure you get enough (optical) zoom. A 2x zoom isn’t going to do much for you. A 3x is the average you’ll find in most digital cameras will probably be good for most uses. More on lenses later.

Connection
How does the camera connect to your computer? If you have a USB port in your computer, you’ll want a camera that can connect via USB as opposed to a slow serial connection.

On the other hand, if your computer doesn’t have a USB port, is there a serial connector available for the camera you’re looking at? If so, is it a special order and how long does it take to get it?

Storage
What does the camera use to store images with? If it uses a memory stick, make sure you consider buying additional sticks when you get your camera. A typical 8 meg memory stick that comes with a 2 megapixel camera only holds 5 or 6 images at the camera’s best quality.

Some cameras use a 3.5 inch disk for storage. Be careful of these!
Although it may sound like a good idea, a 3 megapixel camera at high resolution produces a 1 meg file (compressed!). That’s only 1 picture per disk.

Here’s a few more things to look out for when trying to make your digital camera purchase.

Picture Formats
When you’re trying to decide on which digital camera to get, check and see how many different picture formats it supports.

You want something that can produce both uncompressed (usually TIFF) and compressed (usually JPEG) images. I personally use the high quality JPEG setting on my camera for most of my shooting. TIFFs are just too big and the difference in quality is not ascertainable by mere mortals.

You also want to be able to shoot at a lower resolution than the camera’s maximum. That way, If you’re running short on memory, you can squeeze a few more shots on your memory stick.

Auxiliary Lens / Flash
This was a biggie for me. While a 3x zoom may work for the “average” user, I needed something that allowed me to do some wide angle work as well as have a good telephoto lens.

So, the camera I purchased a few months back was a Nikon Coolpix 990 (note that this isn’t the only camera that can accept lenses). It has auxiliary lenses that screw into the filter ring on the front of the lens. I now have an ultra-wide fisheye lens plus a nice telephoto.

In addition to lenses, I wanted a good flash. The flash that is built into most of these cameras gives you a top range of 15-20 feet – at best. I wanted a camera that could take a powerful auxiliary flash (again, the Nikon isn’t the only camera that fits this requirement, but I liked it better than the rest). If you need more reach than the small built in flash can deliver, then make sure you can attach an external flash to any camera you consider.

As an added bonus, if you get a camera that can take an external flash, you can place that flash on a bracket and eliminate red-eye.

Flash Distance
Speaking of flashes, make sure you check the distance the built in flash is good for. You don’t want a camera with a wimpy flash that only travels a few feet (well, unless you can get an external flash for it as described above).

Battery Type
This may not sound important, but it is. Anyone who owns a digital camera can tell you they eat batteries the way a sumo wrestler eats at a buffet.

Make sure the camera can run on regular (or rechargeable) “AA” type batteries. You don’t want a camera that eats through expensive lithium batteries every 10 shots or so.

One thing to remember about digital cameras, they do eat through batteries. I recommend getting some Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable for it. I have some for mine and they have saved me a fortune.

Final Notes
Choosing a digital camera isn’t easy. There’s a huge selection out there and only you can determine which features you need.

For instance, if you shoot wildlife photos, a small 3x zoom probably isn’t going to cut it (unless you can attach auxiliary lenses to it). If you shoot lots of close-ups, make sure the camera has some sort of macro capability. If you shoot big group photos indoors, an external flash may be necessary.

My advice is to make a list of things you want to be able to do with the camera then go to somewhere that can help you make a good purchase decision.

Finally, buy the BEST camera you can possibly afford. Or wait until the price drops on one with the type of features you want.
